Friendly reminders:
Jog-a-Thon is coming up! Please help your second grader gather a few more pledges this weekend, and send the form with them on Monday. The Jog-a-Thon is this coming Thursday, October 9.
The week ahead:
Book fair in the lunch room all week, open after school. I forgot to send the book preview packet home. I will send it home on Monday.
Monday: Jog-a-Thon forms due.
Thursday: Jog-a-Thon. Pack an extra snack; second graders will have earned it! Primary grades will be running from 9:00 to 9:30. You are welcome to come cheer everyone on, and we'll probably put you to work tallying, too.
Riggs:
We will continue our review of the multiletter phonograms, verbally, in writing, and with ASL. Remember, Riggs homework should be OUT LOUD and as neat and as careful as possible. I've been seeing some sloppy work come back, and will be sending it back to do over in the upcoming weeks. "Do it nice or do it twice."

The week in review:
Riggs:
We started the multiletter phonograms in earnest this week: we reviewed the "ers" and beyond. Students also received their Riggs notebooks. We will be building them into useful tools, and they will start to come home in a few weeks with...Riggs homework that is spelling words!

Counting coins is fun and easy to do at home, while waiting at a restaurant, for the doctor, etc. We start with the largest amount, then go from there. We practice sliding them across a hard surface, and counting them more than once to be sure we got the right amount. At this point in the year, we are staying below a dollar total. The hardest part right now is moving from quarters to dimes, then from dimes to nickels. It is something that gets better with practice! Your second grader should also be able to: name the president, tell obverse (heads) and reverse (tails), name the building, name the coin, and name how much it is worth.
Core Knowledge:
We wrapped up our cycles in nature with art, food, and an "assessment." It was a lot of fun, but it's time to move on. Please see below for some pictures of our fun learning this week.

We will be having a Pioneer Life centers afternoon on October 28 (Tuesday), and would love helpful hands! No experience required, but if you are inclined to sewing or crocheting, bonus (we love dads, too, and we can put them to work threading needles--mwahahahaha!).

We are over halfway through Charlotte's Web. Caring for books, following along, the satisfaction of sticking with a book and finishing it, friendship, big words, reading Roman Numerals, are some of the things we learn about with this book.

One of my favorite things to do as a teacher is draw with my class. Today we talked about the different names for male and female animals, and practiced drawing them. Enjoy!

We also practiced centers today, reviewing phonograms.
Finally, to celebrate cycles in nature (and apples!), we made applesauce. Yum! Apples peeled and chopped, some water, some cinnamon, dump in crock pot and cook until mushy. No sugar needed!
