Friendly reminders/clarification:
Snacks and lunches looked pretty good overall. Please remember that students do not need juice at school. They are all doing a great job staying hydrated with water in their water bottles.
PLEASE put your child's name/initials on EVERYTHING. The school lost and found is right outside our classroom. I will try to help things find their home before they end up there, but putting a name on something almost guarantees it will get where it needs to go.

Riggs:
Continue practice of pencil grip, sitting. Introduce holding hand holding paper, paper tilted properly, top baseline, dotted midline, bottom baseline.
Saxon Math 1:
Writing numbers 1, 4, and 5. Using linking cubes as learning tools. Counting and ordering numbers 0-9. Placing an object on a graph. Writing numbers 2, 3, and 7. Identifying circle and square. Identifying number of sides and angles of a square.

I will begin the Oregon State Kindergarten Readiness Assessment, which is a short, painless one-on-one assessment of early school skills (letter names, letter sounds, concepts of math). I will be pulling one or two children per day during some of their specialist (PE and World Languages) classes.
Week in review:
Riggs:
Students were introduced to the idea of "sitting like a scholar:" spine aligned (sitting up tall), feet flat on the floor. We will keep practicing and adding to this. Students were also introduced to the preferred pencil grip that will be used throughout their primary years here at Cascade. This keeps the "window" open between forefinger and thumb and relaxes the grip, allowing for more endurance during writing. To help students get it right, they are being taught to make a peace sign, set the pencil in, and then pinch down gently. It would be great if you would encourage this grip at home during homework and other times!
Students also were introduced to the idea of writing their name in the top left corner of papers.
Saxon Math 1:
What does a mathematician do? Building towers of linking cubes. Using linking cubes as learning tools. Counting 1-5. What is homework?

There are four seasons in the year, and we can name all four (here's a song that helps us).
Homework and homework planners:
Re: the colored clip chart. I am not instituting the clip chart for a while. I and your child's other teachers will be taking copious notes, gently instructing on appropriate behavior, and communicating with you when we have noticed some patterns.
Stay tuned for a longer explanation of how it works, but the color will be a word written at the bottom of the day in their planner.
