*Friday is our field trip day! Parents drop off like normal and pick up by 3:30 like normal. As we are going to two farms if you would like your child to wear rain boots instead of their nice school shoes they may for the field trip. Do also pack their school shoes and a plastic grocery bag. When we get back to school we will change into school shoes and put the rain boots into the grocery bag. If you purchased a field trip shirt your child may wear that instead of the white uniform shirt; if you did not get a field trip shirt please wear the white uniform shirt. Jeans are allowed too as we are going to a farm. Do please send them with a rain coat in case it rains!
Riggs:
- We had another week of letter strokes trying to get the class as a whole to be as homogeneous as possible with letter strokes, spacing and strokes fitting in the lines. We learned two new ways to practice Riggs strokes. Rainbow Roll and Write and Roll and Write. They had a blast. In case you wanted to try it at home her'e's how:
- Rainbow Roll and Write: Have a dice, each side corresponds with a color. They roll the dice, pick up the color and write the stroke one on top of another. If you're practicing the circle it will look like 3 or more circles on top of each other in different colors.
- Roll and Write: Each dice side corresponds to a stroke. When they roll that number they write the stroke associated with it.
- This week we are starting our phonograms. If you bought the Riggs flash cards you can break them out now.
Saxon Math:
- Last week we made shapes on geoboards and talked about the inside and outside of the shapes we made.
- We had our second assessment and acted out more Some, Some More and Some, Some Went Away stories. Ex) If John had 3 apples on the table and Mary put 2 more on, how many apples does John have? If Luke put 4 apples on the table and gave 3 to Lucinda how many apples does he have left?
- We learned about who is on the penny and the different tails sides of the pennies. We counted pennies.
- We talked about numbers in between 2 numbers. If you put a cube on 2 and a cube on 5 what are the two numbers in between? 3 and 4.
- This week we will be dividing solids into halves, picturing and combining sets, graphing a picture on a pictograph, counting from 0-23, having our 3rd written assessment, making lists to solve problems, and if we have time writing addition number sentences and showing equivalent forms of the same number.
Core Knowledge:
- We looked at maps.
- Talked about and mapped where our families come from.
- Learned about the oceans and continents.
- Read the book "The Titanic" and talked about how the captains used maps to guide them from England to Canada.
- We made globes with balloons.
- We read "A House for Hermit Crab" and drew a map of who he talked to and where they were.
- In partners we created a map of our classroom to find the treasure. Special pirate stickers.
- This week we will be talking about Christopher Columbus, Independence Day, Native Americans and slavery.
Days to remember:
- Friday October 21st is our school field trip day. We are traveling with 1st grade to Old McDonald's Farm in Corbett, Oregon followed by a visit to Bushue's Family Farm in Boring. When we get back to school (sometime after 1) we will be weighing our pumpkins, guessing how many seeds are in each one (parent chaperones I would love your help to cut the tops off the pumpkins while the children are playing at recess), counting the seeds and seeing if pumpkins will sink or float.
