We will slowly move forward with our phonograms: m, n, p, r, u, v, w, x.
Saxon 1 Math:
Writing addition number sentences; finding different ways to get the same sum; ordinal positions to 6th; addition facts: doubles with sums up to 10; rectangles.
Core Knowledge:
Christopher Columbus: explorer and adventurer. Why did he sail west? What did he find? Who met him there? What were his ships like? What is it like to explore?
Life skill:
We will continue with our shoe-tying efforts.
Other:
FIELD TRIP FRIDAY on October 23. Please be sure your child is at school, on time, prepared for the trip:
- Jackets, sweaters, hats, rain gear, etc. suitable to weather report.
- Old tennis shoes or mud boots.
- A low/no-waste healthy lunch and water bottle. There is no school lunch service on Field Trip Fridays.
- Regular uniform bottoms (a day for pants rather than shorts or jumpers). Either a regular uniform shirt or a CHPCS field trip t-shirt (will be sent home on Monday to those who ordered them).
We are going to Kruger's Farm on Sauvie Island. When we come back to school, we will do produce math with our freshly picked produce!

We reviewed phonograms and studied j, k, l.
Saxon 1 Math:
Identifying a number in between two other numbers; dividing a solid in half; concept of halves: two equal shares; graphing on a pictograph; how to use wrap-ups. Wrap-ups are great for practicing math facts, as well as developing coordination, and in our case at school, teamwork!
Core Knowledge:
We made globes with balloons. We explored the idea of directions on a map and where they are in real life. Outside, we thought about where the North Pole is, where Mt. Hood is, where Antarctica is, and where the ocean is. Regularly pointing out which direction you are driving as well as major landmarks and their direction in relation to home/school help children develop a sense of place, and an awareness of a wider world.
Life skill:
Eighth grade buddies helped us with our shoe tying! Please be sure to continue practicing this life skill at home, too!
Other:
We participated in the Great Oregon Shakeout, and know how to act during an earthquake. Drop! Cover! Hold on! When the shaking is over, evacuate the building. If you are outside, move away from buildings and trees.
We finished our MAP testing! Results will be discussed at each parent-teacher conference.
Dr. Currey came and chatted with the class about what's in a doctor's bag.
Friendly reminders/pleas:
Please be sure your child's uniform is in compliance. Some frequent problems we've seen so far this year:
- Socks and tights must be black, navy, or white.
- Shoes must be mostly black, navy, white, or brown.
If you must pick your child up early, PLEASE notify us BEFORE you arrive to pick them up. When I am surprised by an early departure, 25 children must wait for me to gather homework/papers, help child pack bag, etc. If I have a head's up, I am able to do this during non-instructional time.
