Second graders studied the Statue of Liberty today, or as she is officially known, Liberty Enlightening the World. We discussed some of her symbolism, the concept of liberty and freedom, and the meaning of Emma Lazarus' poem, "New Colossus." Part of your second grader's homework tonight is to tell about the Statue of Liberty. Be sure to ask!
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
