Second graders, in addition to a lot of other important work this week, have been working on creating their own Kachina dolls, in the style of the tribes of the Southwest. A Kachina is a spirit of nature, and a Kachina dancer is believed to become a certain Kachina for the duration of a dance. A Kachina doll is not a toy, but another effigy or representation of that Kachina. Second graders looked at pictures of many Kachina dolls to get ideas for colors, patterns, shapes, and the overall style of the Southwest.
Second graders will take some time tomorrow to write about the specific Kachina that they created.
