Second grade had some great adult helpers today! Thank you Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Bandara, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Robison, and Mrs. Gilliam for making our centers a success! It is in our mission and vision to bring learning alive for children through all of the senses and through meaningful hands-on experiences. It is very difficult to do that without volunteers.
We made butter (it was a hit):
Here is the recipe: heavy whipping cream in an airtight container (fill about halfway). Shake until butter is formed. Rinse the buttermilk off. Yum!
We mixed the butter in smaller containers and and in my ice cream churn (sans ice), just to see how that worked.
We made thaumascopes, which were popular toys in the olden days:
They work due to our brain's
persistence of vision, which is also the principle behind animated film and are fun and easy to make.
We learned how to crochet (well, really, chain, which is the beginning of crocheting). Every student successfully made a bracelet or necklace (my lofty goal of making mitten strings was sadly not achieved today).
We made yarn dolls (which was good practice for cornhusk dolls, which will be next unit).
Life was fun and lots of work in the olden days! It required many skills, and much perseverance.
